KARTA is a non-governmental organization in Poland with 40 years of experience. Our purpose is to reveal and to disseminate as wide as possible the truth about the 20th century events which have influenced the region’s contemporary life. This way we want to promote tolerance and democracy. It is our intention to cater to some of the social needs arising from historical inheritance. We also take up international activity in order to transcend the boundaries delineated in the past. KARTA has been pursuing its mission by operating public-domain archives and carrying out long-term documentary, publishing, educational and popularizing programs.
KARTA’s mission says: “We discover, safeguard and popularize history as seen from the perspective of
the individual. We thus ensure that the past becomes a basis for understanding, for building a civic
community and encouraging reconcilement. And that is how we repair the future”. We undertake
opinion-creating actions to promote an open-minded (free from nationalisms or ideologies) approach to
the past, to prevent history from being used as an arm in political conflicts.
