The primary purpose of Constellations, a Belgian non-profit organisation founded in 2001 by a group of parents, is to help create appropriate and sustainable living, residential and day-care facilities for people with intellectual disabilities.
Constellations was established in response to the severe shortage of suitable places for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, including people with complex support needs or a dual diagnosis.
From 2006 to 2013, Constellations directly developed its own facilities in Brussels. Since 2014, the organisation has expanded its approach by supporting projects initiated by other Belgian non-profit organisations. Constellations provides project-development expertise, fundraising support, access to public and private funding, and assistance with the construction or renovation of suitable facilities. This support enables its partner organisations to complete their projects and open new places more rapidly.
All projects supported by Constellations must be consistent with its charitable purpose and contribute directly to reducing the shortage of appropriate places for people with intellectual disabilities. Once a facility is operational, its running costs are generally covered by the competent regional public authorities, helping to ensure its long-term sustainability.
– Facilities built and opened between 2006 and 2024
Between 2006 and 2024, Constellations contributed to the construction and opening of 10 facilities providing a total of 234 places for people with intellectual disabilities.
– Facilities being built between 2024 and 2028
Between 2024 and 2028, Constellations is contributing to the development and construction of nine additional facilities providing 328 new places: 191 places in the Brussels-Capital Region and 137 places in Wallonia.
Overall, by 2028, Constellations will have contributed to the construction or development of 19 facilities providing a total of 562 places for people with intellectual disabilities. These projects also contribute to the creation of qualified and sustainable employment in the care and social-support sectors.
