About

The Future Library Foundation is a Norwegian public-benefit foundation established to safeguard and realise the 100-year public artwork Future Library (2014–2114), conceived by artist Katie Paterson. The artwork consists of 1,000 trees planted in Nordmarka forest in Oslo, the commissioning of one author each year for 100 years, the preservation of 100 unpublished manuscripts, and their future publication in 2114 on paper made from the forest itself. Future Library was conceived as a long-term cultural trust. It invites society to think beyond short-term cycles and to place literature, ecology, and civic responsibility within a 100-year horizon. By safeguarding the forest, the manuscripts, and the annual public handover — as well as their secure storage in the Silent Room at the Deichman Library — the Foundation protects a shared cultural promise to future readers and ensures that this century-long public artwork remains accessible and faithfully stewarded until 2114.
