Founded in 1978 as Paris Audiovisuel, an initiative supported by the French capital to collect and promote photography, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) opened its doors in 1996, under the leadership of Jean-Luc Monterosso and Henry Chapier. Since then, it has become France’s foremost institution dedicated to photography in all its forms. The museum celebrates both renowned figures and emerging talents, showcasing the diverse artistic approaches that define contemporary photography.
The MEP is also Paris’s only institution dedicated to collecting photography. Bringing together an exceptional collection of 24,000 photographs and videos by artists since the 1950s, as well as one of the largest specialist libraries in Europe, the MEP is a unique place in Paris where photography engages in a dialogue with other disciplines such as the visual arts, film, fashion, literature and performance art.
