The Opéra Comique was founded in 1714 during the reign of Louis XIV. It is one of the oldest theatres and music hall in France, together with the Opéra de Paris and the Comédie-Française. Its history was alternately turbulent and prestigious until it was registered as one of the 5 National Theaters in 2005.
The Opéra Comique has produced the most famous masterpieces of French operas: Carmen by Bizet in 1875, Manon by Massenet in 1884, Les Contes d’Hoffmann by Offenbach in 1882, Lakmé by Delibes in 1883, Pelléas et Mélisande by Debussy in 1902 and many others…
Its mission is to ensure, for the widest audience, the production and dissemination of lyrical works and shows (about 8 to 10 productions per year). House of vocal art and musical theater, it highlights the diversityy of expressions, from baroque opera to contemporary creation.
The Opéra Comique is an inclusive theater and accomodates diverse audiences, including people who are usually estranged from the operatic world (preferential rates for young people and accessible performances and inclusive RELAX sessions for people suffering from disabilities and off-site projects and the Maîtrise Populaire for people from disadvantaged backgrounds).
In 2007, it created the Foundation for the Opéra Comique under the aegis of the Foundation of France to collect funds and support its artistic, educational and social activities
