Turner Contemporary is one of the UK’s leading art galleries which has proven itself as a key contributor to civic life. Celebrating Margate’s connection with the painter JMW Turner (1775 – 1851), an artist who believed that art could be an agent of change, our programme offers free access to creative and cultural experiences through our exhibition and learning programme. Working with Kent County Council, a committed partner in a long-term strategy that puts culture at the heart of place-making, we have established a locally embedded, nationally significant gallery connecting art, people, and place. We are renowned for our innovative exhibitions and learning programme, and our building is recognised as an important architectural icon.
Margate, our home, has fast become one of the most exciting creative hubs in the UK with a growing arts scene. Though this rise echoes that of few other seaside towns, the economy within Thanet is fragile with poor levels of education, low wages, poor health and the highest rate of youth unemployment in the south-east. The gallery’s activities reflect a commitment to inspire through art and look to develop social and economic impacts that help tackle these local challenges. Positioning ourselves as a cultural anchor, we look to foster relationships and build networks that champion a more creative and connected community.
Aligned with Turner Contemporary’s belief that everyone can be creative, it continues the institution’s work in encouraging individuals to express themselves in their unique way. When working with people of all ages, we encourage this by focussing on three habits of mind observed in artists: Creativity, Curiosity and Critical thinking, which we see as vital 21st-century skills.
Since starting in January 2022, Clarrie Wallis has put in place a new vision, strategy, and plan. This builds on the foundations created by her predecessor, that have made Turner Contemporary one of the UK’s leading art galleries. Her goal now is to build the gallery’s international profile and presence. Alongside this, she wants us to continue supporting [local people’s creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking through an innovative and impactful exhibition and learning programme.
